Creative Road presented renowned North American artist Marilyn Minter’s video installation ‘Smash’ as part of Vivid Sydney 2022 – an annual festival of light, music and ideas.

‘Smash’ responded to Vivid Sydney’s 2022 creative direction – ‘the soul of our city’ – both conceptually and literally. Marilyn’s work upends stereotypes of the female body ingrained in popular culture.

As a play on words, the bedazzled ‘sole’ can be seen as a catalyst for change; challenging notions of female beauty, breaking glass ceilings and smashing the patriarchy. Emblematic of seismic change, the work made in 2014 was presented at an arresting scale.
